How to Get Started with Remote Riding Lessons: Your Setup Guide
Are you ready to take your riding to the next level—all from the comfort of your own arena or riding space? Remote lessons are a flexible, effective way to stay connected with my professional instruction no matter where you are. If you’re considering joining my remote lesson program, here’s everything you need to get started smoothly and confidently.
What You’ll Need for a Seamless Remote Lesson
To ensure you get the most out of your lesson time, having the right setup is key. Don’t worry—it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Below is a breakdown of the essential tools I recommend for clear communication and video tracking.
1. Pivo Silver – For Reliable Motion Tracking
I highly recommend the Pivo Silver for tracking your ride. It uses your phone’s camera to follow your movements automatically, ensuring I can see you clearly throughout the lesson. The Silver version offers better tracking speed and accuracy compared to the basic model, which is especially helpful for more dynamic riding.
You can find these on the Pivo store or used for a great price on Ebay.
Important: Be sure to download the Pivo+ app from your app store (iOS or Android). This app is what connects your phone to the Pivo device and enables the auto-tracking feature. Once downloaded, follow the quick setup instructions to pair your phone with your Pivo—don’t worry, I’m happy to walk you through it if you need help during your first lesson.
2. Audio: Stay Connected and Aware
Clear communication is vital during remote lessons, but it’s equally important that you remain aware of your surroundings for safety. You have two great audio options:
- Open-Ear Bone Conduction Headphones – These sit outside your ears, allowing you to hear my instructions clearly while still being fully aware of your environment. I like Shokz because their range is quite good but I am sure other brands would be great too. You can buy Shokz new on their website or on Amazon or pick up a used pair on eBay. Older models work just fine.
- Earbud in One Ear – If you already have a pair of Bluetooth earbuds, you can use just one in one ear and leave the other ear open to stay alert to your surroundings. Make sure it’s secure and won’t fall out mid-ride.
3. A Sturdy Tripod – Keep Your Phone Secure
You’ll need a tripod to hold your phone while the Pivo does the tracking. Look for something budget-friendly but stable—you don’t want it wobbling or toppling over, especially outdoors. Many decent options are under $30 and work just fine. Or you can buy the Pivo silver bundle with the tripod.
Tip: If you often ride on uneven ground, consider a tripod with adjustable legs for stability.
4. Fully Charged Phone – Stay Powered Up
Your phone is the heart of this setup, so make sure it’s fully charged before your lesson starts. Bonus points if you have a portable power bank nearby, just in case! Pivo sells a power bank that works well with the setup. But a smaller power bank that plugs directly into the phone without wires works well too.
Also, check that:
- Your camera lens is clean.
- Your internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) is strong enough for video streaming.
- You have the Pivo+ app downloaded and ready to go.
